Title
Cover of Zoe’s Summer 1910 East Side, with William Oberhardt portrait.
Description
She posed while reporting undercover, pretending to be a blind immigrant musician, begging on Lower East Side curbs. Other beggars gave her coins, while wealthy philanthropists walked blithely past. A day of wheezing out songs including “My Old Kentucky Home” (learned during her impoverished Kentucky childhood) earned her $1.50—more than her magazine’s usual daily wages. She nonetheless gave the proceeds to poor neighbors, “for fear of bad luck.”
