Description
The Western codex form is first found in the Coptic books of Eastern Christianity. The most notable of these consist of a group of 13 papyrus codices discovered in 1945 near the village of Nag Hammadi in Egypt. The book shown here is a replica of Nag Hammadi Codex VI. The original, a single-quire papyrus manuscript bound in a limp leather flap binding, contains Coptic translations of early Christian and Gnostic texts, as well as a Gnostic treatment of Plato’s Republic, copied out between 350 and 400 CE.
