Description

Innocentia victrix, printed in 1671 in Canton, China, is a rare example of the books printed from xylographic blocks by the Jesuits between 1662 and 1718 in China. The title-page and the verso of the half-title exhibited show the use of Chinese characters and Romanized Chinese (above and below the characters), with Latin text at the bottom. The text involves a dispute between Jesuit, Chinese, and Muslim astronomers over the accuracy of observations and the reform of the Chinese calendar that led to the expulsion and later legal vindication of the Jesuits and European science.
