Description
In 1737 Lamesle purchased the foundry of Jean and Pierre Cot, which had been established in 1670. The Cot foundry matrices included the types of Jean Jannon, who began cutting type in 1611, as well as other early type cutters, like Garamond and Granjon, whose types are displayed in this specimen book. Thus this book provides a valuable resource for the study of work by these craftsmen.
Updike felt that Lamesle’s book represented the influential French types of the last quarter of the seventeenth and first half of the eighteenth century more comprehensively than any other publication.
