Description
Zoe’s East Side was so often compared to the tastemaker and philosopher Elbert Hubbard’s Philistine (1895-1915) that she differentiated herself in 1912 by switching to coated stock, lightening “the entire complexion of the magazine.” Elbert Hubbard was an East Side reader and, like Zoe, published reminiscences, aphorisms, outrage (“Degeneracy always begins in the cities”) and musings on workers’ lives and current events. But unlike unbusinesslike Zoe, he ran advertisements from corporations, including Tiffany & Co. and Anheuser-Busch.
