Description
Illustrated with an author photo, the tragic story is based on Zoe’s Kansas frontier hardships and on Runnymede, a short-lived British expat colony near Wichita. The heroine, a sunburned Kansas cowgirl, dies while protecting her genteel British suitor from a tree branch felled by a cyclone. Iowa-based Midland Monthly (1894-1899), a progressive general-interest publication, was Zoe’s first known writing outlet outside Wichita.
