Description
Yellowbacks were inexpensive novels and other works sold in 19th-century Britain. Presented in single volumes bound in poor-quality strawboard and sporting eye-catching, multi-color illustrations, their boards were usually covered in glazed, bright yellow-coated papers. Yellowbacks usually sold for two shillings apiece in bookstalls, often within railway stations. Their texts were generally inexpensive stereotyped reprints of established works that had already made the rounds in circulating libraries or that had been previously sold in parts.
