Description

The Italian Jesuit Juan Ludovico Bertonio was a pioneer in the study of the Aymara language of Peru and Bolivia who taught Aymara to Jesuits students at the Juli mission on the shore of Lake Titicaca in Peru. Bertonio published four works in Aymara in 1612 whose imprint states that they were printed by Francisco del Canto at Juli. Since the 19th century there has been a debate as to whether or not Canto moved his press to Juli to print these works, which today seems unlikely to most experts.
