Illuminated manuscript on parchment.

This illuminated manuscript, funded by the members of the confraternity, is the original foundation document issued by Philip II in 1569 confirming the Ordinances that governed the University and Hospital of Seafarers. The University, House of Trade, and the Consulate of Commerce of Seville, supervised trade in the Indies. The manuscript features Renaissance illuminated capitals and trompe l’oeil borders of flowers, birds, butterflies, insects, and medallions.

Este manuscrito iluminado, financiado por los miembros de la cofradía, es el documento fundacional original emitido por Felipe II en 1569 que confirma las Ordenanzas que regían la Universidad y Hospital de Marinos. La Universidad, la Casa de Comercio y el Consulado de Comercio de Sevilla supervisaban el comercio de Indias. El manuscrito presenta capiteles iluminados renacentistas y cenefas en trampantojo de flores, pájaros, mariposas, insectos y medallones.
