Anne Lyon Haight Collection of Printing Ephemera.

Date

1897-1963.

Description

Anne Lyon Haight (1891-1977) was an author, bibliophile, and collector, who befriended many of the leading book artists of the early twentieth century. Among them was Frederic Warde (1894-1939), printer and type designer, best known for his design of the Arrighi typeface. His wife, Beatrice Warde née Becker (1900-1969) was an important scholar of typography.

Shown here, alongside one of Frederic’s sketchbooks, is a self-portrait of Beatrice dedicated to her husband (using her nom de plume ‘Paul Beaujon’) and a letter from Stanley Morison (1889-1967), presumably to Frederic, of which only the first page survives. The portrait and letter date to ca. 1925-1926 when the Wardes lived and worked in England at Morison’s behest. During these years, the couple’s relationship fell apart, and Beatrice and Morison began an affair.
