Publisher

Moses King,

Date

1899

Description

Grouped according to vocation, there are 2,337 portraits of notable New Yorkers, four to a page, with no text other than name, title, and corporate or institutional affiliation. The introduction states that the ?rst edition of the book was 50,000 copies. The publisher gives credit to a number of people who worked on the editing of the book, presumably the difficult issue of whom to include. At the end of the 19th century it is quite obvious that “Notable New Yorkers” meant solely white males, as there does not seem to be a single female or person of color in the book.
