Description

As one of the foremost scholars in the viceroyalty, Sigüenza was commissioned in 1680 by the City Council of Mexico City for the design and construction of a triumphal arch celebrating the arrival of the new viceroy. He described in detail the design of the arch and its symbolism in the Theater of Political Virtues. The arch was 37 meters high and 15 meters wide following classical models. The allegorical paintings on the arch depicted the virtues of the new viceroy, which Sigüenza daringly based on the Aztec monarchs.
