Description

The Mapa de Tequaltiche forms part of the geographical reports by local officials in New Spain ordered in 1579 by Philip II. The officials had to answer printed questionnaires and provide a map of their jurisdiction. Indigenous residents of Tequaltiche prepared the map, and lieutenant mayor Hernando de Gallegos supplied the Spanish captions. At lower left is a scene of the Battle of Nochistlán from the conquest of the region in 1541 by viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. Above the battle scene appears seated the pre-Conquest Caxcan lord Aquano with his two sons.
