Description

The Codex Otlazpan, combining pictographs and Spanish texts, was prepared in 1549 to 1550 in order to formalize a tribute contract imposed by Royal Audiencia of New Spain upon the Otomí village of Otlazpan. The Otomí people were the original settlers of the Mexican highlands north of Mexico City, and their language is believed to have been the language of Teotihuacan (400 BCE-750 CE). In the 16th century the Otomí used Aztec pictographs in manuscripts such as the Otlazpan Codex, which could be read in both Otomí and Nahuatl. The codex shows the type and quantity of tribute received by the village leaders.
