Description
An account of the resource
This 16th-century Hebrew Bible, bound with the New Testament in Syriac, features an almost unbroken record of English ownership dating from 1698 to 1927 and spanning eleven different owners. The endleaves contain a manuscript table of contents in English and in Hebrew, as well as stenographic notes written in pencil. The first owner’s name inscribed in the book is that of John Russell (1698). We have identified two of the book’s 19th-century owners: H. J. Breay (1855) was likely The Reverend H. J. Breay, while E. P. Breay (1884) was a woman known for founding a home for blind children in Kilburn, England.

Description
An account of the resource
This publication is from the wreckage of the successful efforts by other railroads to stop or delay the Rock Island-UP Merger. After a decade of regulatory hearings and conflict, the merger was approved, but the Union Pacific walked away in 1974 and the company entered trusteeship a year later. The Rock Island spent its last years on the edge of failure while attempting to rebuild itself. The company was liquidated in 1980.

Description
An account of the resource
Depicts a mêlée of combatants using engraving tools as weapons: Hogarth with his dog is the only combatant with a palette instead of a copper-plate for a shield, and paint-brushes in his quiver. His opponent, Antoine Masson (1636-1700), defends himself with a rapier. William Woollett (1735-85) spars with J. J. Baléchou (1719-64). Behind them Dürer attacks Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1480-c. 1530). An unidentified engraver is firing a huge bottle of aquafortis supported on a grindstone. Second or third state.

First issued in monthly installments in Bentley’s Miscellany from February 1837 through April 1839, Oliver was a great success even though it had to compete with the Pickwick Papers for much of its serialization. Probably for the first time in his career as an illustrator, Cruikshank’s name does not appear on the title page.
