Description

In present-day Ethiopia, scribes continue to produce scrolls and codices using techniques similar to those practiced by their ancestors in centuries past. This manuscript codex and scroll, written on parchment and housed in leather two-piece cases, were probably produced in the mid- to-late 20th century. Both bear text written in Ge’ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, while the scroll is illuminated with the image of an archangel. Such books are traditionally carried on one’s person to bring health and to provide spiritual protection.
