Description

The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan hai jing), composed during the Warring States period and the Western Han dynasty (ca. 4th-1st century BCE), serves as a compendium of ancient Chinese religion, mythology, shamanism, geography, flora, and fauna. It covers all of the distant regions of land and sea surrounding China and the exotic gods, peoples, and creatures that populated them. For his translation and illustrations Villanueva used the Shanhaijing guangzhu (1667) edition of Wu Renchen (1628?-1689?).
