Description

These two documents form part of an exchange between Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina Sidonia on the one hand and Philip II and his staff on the other. The king named the duke commander of the Armada while the duke, for his part, tried to escape this unwanted honor or, at least, wrangle some gift out of it. In the letter of 29 February, the duke accepts the order but protests his poverty and pleads for a land grant for his two sons. Philip responded to Vázquez in the second document exhibited here, a written opinion (“consulta”). Instructing his secretary to draw up a “very pleasing” response to the duke, Philip will reassure his doubting commander not to worry because he believes God will watch over the fate of the Armada and should the duke not return, he will look after the children.
