Description

Manuscript illuminations in letters patent of gentility are notable for the achievements of Spanish illuminators during the Renaissance and Baroque periods of the 16th to 17th centuries. This letters patent contains two sets of double-page spreads with fully illuminated borders of the Spanish style influenced by earlier Flemish examples. Here the artist renders the imperial coat of arms of Charles V above, and the Ortega de la Peña coat of arms centered on the lower margin flanked by two putti, one of whom wears white socks.
