Description

Jews are documented in the Iberian Peninsula (Sepharad) by the fourth century. As translators of Arabic and Hebrew texts into Latin and Castilian at the court of King Alfonso X of Castile (Toledo, 1252-1284), Jewish scholars were fundamental in transmitting classical knowledge to medieval Europe. This Sefer Torah fragment exhibits the characteristics of pre-Expulsion scrolls written in monumental Sephardic square script in black ink, with tagin (decorative crowns) on select letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
