Intended primarily for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in American literature, this survey covers Poe, Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Whitman, Twain, Henry Jamesóand Melville in the chapter by Stanley Williams, who directed doctoral dissertations for a generation of Melville scholars at Yale.
