Description
Ludovico Arrighi, born in Vicenza in 1475, was a scribe in the Papal Chancery in Rome. Unlike many calligraphers, Arrighi had no compunction about delving into printing. In 1524, Arrighi began printing from type in partnership with the goldsmith Lautizio Perugino. We can assume that Arrighi provided the design of the typeface and Perugino cut the metal punches.
Arrighi’s were based on a fairly consistent, formal calligraphy, in contrast to the Aldine italics which are more irregular and casual in appearance. Also in contrast to the Aldine/Griffo italics, Arrighi’s types had very few ligatures.
In the twentieth century, many italics were produced in the chancery style pioneered by Arrighi.
